How To: Sync Devices and Users with Intune Integration

Intune is Microsoft’s comprehensive, enterprise-grade Mobile Device Management (MDM) solution for Windows, Android, iOS, and Chrome devices. Now you can automate your entire asset management process by connecting your Intune tenant to your Asset Management for Jira account!

By integrating Intune and Asset Management for Jira, you can:

Import devices from Intune into Asset Management for Jira
Import device users from Intune into Asset Management for Jira
Import device assignment from Intune into Asset Management for Jira

Here is a quick demo that guides you through the entire process:

1. Enable the Integration and Authenticate with Intune

Click Connect to enable the integration. You will be redirected to a Microsoft sign-in screen to grant permission for Asset Management for Jira to read the necessary data from Intune. You must be an administrator of your Intune tenant to grant permissions. Depending on how your organization is set up, you may be required to go through an admin consent process.

We only request Read-only permissions from Intune. We will never overwrite any data in Intune.

2. Choose a Default Asset Type

We need to know what asset type to place imported devices into if you choose not to map an Intune property to your Device Category field. You can freely edit the category of imported devices, so this can either be their permanent category or a temporary one.

3. Configure Sync Settings

You can customize the behavior of your synchronization so that it behaves as needed for your organization:

Default Location

You can set the default location for assets that our synced via Intune.

Assignment

You may prefer to auto-checkout devices to their primary user in Intune. If you change this setting to Yes, we will automatically check-in and checkout assets synced from Intune as necessary based on changes to the primary user.

We search for matching User records using the following properties, in order of precedence:

User ID, for users that have been synced previously
Email address,
User name, if the Intune User Name property is mapped to the AMFJ Name field

If no match is found, a new User record will be created automatically.

Device Creation

By default, the Intune Integration will not create any new assets in Asset Management for Jira. We provide this option to ensure you don't end up with duplicate assets in Asset Management for Jira.

During the first sync, we will try to match your assets in Intune with assets in AMFJ using the Device Name in Intune.

For future syncs, we will use the Intune ID to match assets in AMFJ.

If you want to create new assets in AMFJ if there is no device match, you can enable this option.

Ownership Types

You may prefer to import a subset of Intune devices based on ownership type. For example, it is common for organizations to allow employees to Bring Your Own Device (BYOB), which are granted access to company resources through Intune. If you would like to prevent those devices from being imported, check Company and un-check Personal in the Ownership Types section.

4. Map Intune Properties to Asset Management for Jira Fields

Lastly, you can map Intune Properties to your own custom Asset Fields. Any Intune properties that haven't been mapped won't be populated when the assets are created in AMFJ.

5. Setup is Complete!

When you run the sync for the first time, we will sync all of your assets from Intune and create new assets in Asset Management for Jira. Any future syncs will only update the assets that were previously synced from Intune.

You’re all set! The first time you set up your integration we will sync all of our assets immediately. After that, we will import changes from Intune periodically - once every hour.
