How to Merge Assets
The Merge Assets feature allows you to consolidate duplicate or related assets while preserving important historical context, such as linked issues, attachments, and activity history. This is especially useful when the same asset has been created more than once or when records need to be cleaned up.
Important Concepts
Before merging assets, it’s helpful to understand a few key terms:
- Source asset: The asset you merge from. This asset will be permanently deleted.
- Target asset: The asset you merge into. This asset will be kept.
- Only assets of the same asset type can be merged (for example, Laptop → Laptop).
What Happens During a Merge
When two assets are merged:
- All linked issues, attachments, and activity history from the source asset are transferred to the target asset.
- All field values on the target asset are retained (such as name, ID, location, loanee, & remaining custom field values, etc.).
- The source asset is permanently deleted after the merge is confirmed.
Field values from the source asset are not retained after the merge; only linked issues, attachments, and activity history are transferred to the target asset.
How to Merge Assets
-
Open the asset you want to merge from (this is the asset that will be deleted).
Click Merge.
Search for and select the asset you want to merge into (the target asset that will be kept).
- Only assets of the same asset type will appear in the search results.
- Review the confirmation modal carefully to ensure the correct source and target assets are selected.
- Confirm the merge.
⚠️Once confirmed, the merge cannot be undone.

Best Practices
- Always double-check the target asset before confirming the merge.
- Use merging to clean up duplicates, not to move or overwrite field values.
- If you’re unsure which asset should be kept, review asset history and linked issues first.
