Getting started with Asset Management for Jira

Installation

Head to Settings within Jira.

Note that administrator privileges are required to access the settings.

In the menu on the left side, navigate to “Find new apps” under the “apps” category. Search for “Asset Management”, wait until the entry “Asset Management for Jira” is shown and proceed to “Install” the app

Once the app is installed, you'll notice 'Asset Management' appear in the Apps menu in Jira's top navigation bar.

Once you install the app, it will automatically add a "Linked assets" field to your Service Desk projects. You can manually add them to your Software and Core projects.

Sometimes the custom field isn't created automatically. If you can’t find the custom field “Linked assets”, you can create it on your own following these steps.

  1. Navigate to Jira > Jira settings > Issues > Custom fields
  2. Click Create custom field > Advanced > Assets > Next
  3. Give the custom field an arbitrary name, e.g. “Linked assets”
  4. Click “Create"

Initial Configuration

1. Add your locations

Locations are used to represent where an asset is physically located. For example, if you're working at a university, locations can be the names of buildings or campuses.

All assets must belong to a location, but you can easily move assets from one location to another.

2. Configure your asset types

Asset Management for Jira ships with a few asset attributes out of the box (e.g. Serial Number, Date of Purchase, etc.) that you can use to define asset types to help categorize your asset inventory.

Once you've created at least one asset type, you'll be ready to add or import your asset inventory.

Step 3. Create or import your assets

Once you have your asset types and locations in place, you can go ahead and start populating your asset inventory. You can either add your assets manually, or use CSV importer to bulk import assets from a CSV file.
